Guest bath makeover....

It has been an eventful week...both good and bad...so as much as I am doing now, I thought I would feature one of the MANY projects I have completely over the years.

I wish I had "before and after" pictures of all the changes I have made in this house over the years.  Seems I am constantly "remodeling."  I am sure I have pictures somewhere...but as organized as I am, I really have no desire to dig for them because I am certain the last time I remodeled this room was "pre-digital" which means they are in an album somewhere.

Fact is, a guest bathroom, or any small bathroom, is the PERFECT place to do a small little DIY project.  Even the simplest and inexpensive changes can make a big impact! Wall paint, painted vanity, new faucet, new art, new towels....simple things!

But this was a pretty "extensive" makeover and all started with the new granite.  This is a piece of the granite I used in my kitchen and got such a steal on at an auction. (see here for details about my granite deal)

Initially this was a standard "builder grade" bathroom.... white marble top with a molded sink, standard faucet, mirror glued to the wall, cabinets stained to match the kitchen, an overhead "bar" light and a gaudy "faux paint treatment" that I swear was a the result of some hormone imbalance since I don't drink or do drugs...but I just don't think I would have done it in a "normal" state of mind!

So when I installed new granite in all my bathrooms, it was time to do some serious "remodeling."

Overstock.com....yes, that is where I got this awesome sink and faucet.  They have some great prices on some really neat pieces.  Just read the reviews!    And since I have some minimal plumbing skills, I was able to do the work myself.  Seriously, plumbing is not THAT hard.  Give it a shot...what is the worst that can happen?  You have to call a real plumber and endure his smirk! (Been there done that...my plumber now just openly laughs at me if I have to call!)

Tile backsplash.  Again, you don't need a lot of tile backsplash in a bathroom to make a real statement.  I think I only used 4-5 square feet on this one...and it really makes a big difference.   Easy DIY project...google it!  Give it a try.  It is NOT hard to install a little tile backsplash!  Email me if you get stuck...I will walk you through it!

The builder grade mirror had to go!  But as I have warned before, when you remove those mirrors (with a pry bar, hammer, goggles, heavy boots, gloves and 7 years bad luck!!!) you WILL have sheetrock repair.  It's really not a biggy and NOT a difficult repair!  If anyone is really interested in a tutorial, I will be happy to share how easy it is!   Round mirror from Hobby Lobby.  I actually bought two other mirrors that didn't work before I finally found this one...sometimes home decor is just trial and error!  ALWAYS KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS!

Cabinets...just a little gel stain treatment (here)!   You can restain or even paint your cabinets and it will make a world of difference! There were no knobs or pulls on these cabinets, but remember, you can always paint metal if you can't afford to replace them right now!!!

One difficult project in this bathroom was changing the light fixtures.  The bathroom had a bar light above the mirror on the wall above the mirror.  I wanted these pendant style lights, which means I had to pull the wiring from the existing wall light into the ceiling, wire for two additional lights and then repair the hole where the old light fixture was on the wall!   Again, I can do a tutorial on this, but there are good tutorials all over the internet.  And if you just don't feel qualified to make these changes, call an electrician.  At most, it is an hour job (if you have all your electrical supplies and light fixtures...ask your home improvement store people for help!) and well worth the money!  Fortunately, I have a wonderful son-in-law who is an electrician. I have learned a lot from him over the years so I was able to do this myself!

And don't forget...even if you can't afford the cost to replace your light fixtures, YOU CAN PAINT THEM!!!  Sometimes just a little paint can make a world of difference!  In my opinion, it is always easier to take the fixture down to paint it...its usually a matter of removing a couple of nuts or screws and disconnecting three little wires.  JUST MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF THE POWER!!!!

Wall paint...again, DO NOT PICK A COLOR AT THE STORE!!!  Bring home the samples and look at them in YOUR light!  And invest in the little sample pots and paint HUGE splotches on the walls and give them a day or two! When I do this, I always love my paint color...when I don't, I always end up changing it...never fails!

I have had these prints since day one.  Originally the frames were black and gold to match whatever decor style I had going at the time.  Still liked the prints but wasn't feeling the frames...so I taped off the glass, sprayed the frames with the brush nickel paint...simple update!

And the final touch...one I am still not reeeeal sure about.  Again, if you don't love it, change it...and after a few months, I'm not sure I really love this look.  But right now, it is what it is.

I saw it on Pinterest...collected a bunch of inexpensive frames from thrift stores and garage sales, took out all the backing and glass and painted them all white.  Ho-hum...thought it would grow on me...still waiting.

Again, it's the little changes that make a big impact.  Even if you can't invest in new tops or light fixtures, do what you can...a few little changes can make a big difference!

And remember, keep an eye out for inexpensive bargains on paint, tile, fixtures...sometimes you can't do it all at once.  Make it a process!

But don't do something just because it is "cheap."  Wait until you "feel it."

Love it from day one and you will love it for a long time!

Rocker and pillows...

One thing I enjoy about doing a flea booth is it allows me an opportunity to work on projects I probably wouldn't otherwise if I were just doing for myself.

My first project today were pillows.  I bought two large pillow forms at an auction a few weeks ago.  I wasn't quite sure what to do with them until Debbie at Midtown Eclectic started decorating with some really nifty looking coffee bean burlap bags.  Inspiration!!! They are pretty cool looking, but honestly, they aren't something I would curl up with to read a book...kinda scratchy!  But they are neat!

This weekend I bought a precious little rocker at an auction...a lady told me it was a sewing rocker.  Evidently it is a little rocker women would sit in and sew. I thought it was just a little "kid's" rocker. It is surprisingly sturdy but was in pretty bad shape cosmetically. (Did I take a "before" picture? Um...no!)  It was painted white and had a red velvet upholstery crudely tacked over a busted cane seat. One thing I would like to do eventually is learn to cane...but until then I will just do the best I can upholstering!

First I removed the sloppy upholstery. I sanded the white paint and ended up with the raw wood showing on the edges.  I kind of liked the look but the wood was a little light so I hit all the "raw" spots with a pecan stain.  I used mineral spirits to get the stain off the white paint.  After I 'aged' it by sanding and staining, I coated it with a clear poly to seal it.  Then I recovered the seat with this pretty blue fabric.   I had a little bit of fabric and piping left so I made a little pillow.  Katie thinks it is "too much" of the blue fabric so I will probably try to find another fabric to make a contrasting pillow....maybe...some day when I have nothing to do...lol!  It really doesn't need a pillow...I just like pillows and can't stand to waste a scrap of fabric!

Summer finally hit here today and it got a tad warm.  After working on the chair and pillows I went out in the garage to tag some things I bought this weekend and it was rather toasty!  I finally cried UNCLE and turned on my AC...only to realize after two hours that it was still 84 degrees in my house!!!!  Guess I will be calling the HVAC guy tomorrow....curses!

I had to reinstall a sink and grout some tile at the apartments...tomorrow I have to install an AC, paint and finish some bath repairs...this is the time of year I try to hit it reeeeal early and finish up before it gets too warm!  I'm trying to finish up some paint projects here at the house and I am saving the bigger upholstery jobs for when it is too hot to work outside....which may be this week!

Did I mention I'm not real fond of summer and the heat?

Auction Addiction....

"Hi, my name is Beck and I am an auctionolic."

Seriously...I'm not making light...I have issues.

Saturday, Kaitlyn and I were all set to refinish some of her furniture and a dresser I have...we pulled everything into the driveway and started filling holes, sanding, staining.  NO auction action.  I had just cleared out the majority of my garage and was content to sit back and wait until things began to sell in my booths before I bought MORE stuff.

Then Matt called...it's is always friends or family who bring you down...or at least dangle an unbearable temptation.

He had gone to an auction and bought a box of Mason and Atlas jars for me...he knows I love the jars.  Only problem was he had riden his motorcycle so I had to go pick them up...and that was that.

I got there only to find myself swimming in trailer loads and buildings full of fabulous stuff going for pennies on the dollar.  I just love the bidding action and the flow of the people and having the winning bid on a fantastic item!

Kaitlyn spied one of those fabulous old iron Singer manual sewing machine bases.  Heavy iron and just beautiful...I've seen them turned into tables and selling for well over $100.  She has desperately wanted one for some time, but they really are a tad pricey.  So I told her we would bid up to $30. (I am good at setting reasonable limits and sticking to it!!!)  Fortunately, NO ONE bid against up and we ended up getting it for $5...we were both just floored.  And she and Matt scored on a beautiful little metal and glass patio set for $35 yesterday.  Just too many bargains to be had at auctions!

Anywho, that little box of jars ended up costing me my entire afternoon and two trips to bring stuff home... did I mention the auction was AN HOUR AWAY!

Sooooo, my garage is AGAIN full and I have boxes of nifty stuff to clean and price!

On the upside, I went to an auction yesterday and managed to get out with just two little things!  I can control myself when I sit between Brian and Matt and they hold my arms down!

I decided months ago I was going to have to start a Pinterest support group...I guess I will just have to start one for auctionolics as well.

Brian keeps calling me a hoarder...I know I am not that...I will gladly part with everything I buy.  Truth be told, I am buying things I love for OTHERS...not to keep!

Timeless Treasures!! Midtown Eclectic Mall opens Saturday!!!

Well, it has been four hard days of moving, organizing and pricing...but it finally all came together and it looks pretty spiffy!

Everyone helped move the big stuff in Sunday. My daughter Katie and Kaitlyn have both been a big help the last three days, organizing, staging and pricing everything and it was great to have the help and the company!   I am soooo grateful for them!

Here are a few pictures of the booths.  I have two booths and ended up having to put items in an "overflow" booth...so basically THREE spaces...and they are all full!  My goal is to work everything in the overflow booth into the two main booths!  If the space gets rented I have to move the items to another space. As much as I would like the entire flea market to sell out, I really don't want to have to move just yet.  Hopefully I will sell soooo much this week I will have space in my booths for the "overflow" stuff...hope, hope!

Over the "main booth" I hung this sign...it is a plank of walnut that I sanded, oiled and painted!  Beautiful!

I ordered cute little business cards from Vistaprints.com.  They make great price tags....I just punch a little hole in the corner and tie them on the items with ribbon or string.  I ordered return address stickers for items that need "stick on" price tags.  (I'm am looking at this picture and noticing several items I forgot to price....grrrrr!)

You probably recognize some of the furniture I have featured in the past. I am so excited to have a place to display them, along with all the nifty little trinkets I have picked up at auctions over the last few months!

This is my Brasilia china hutch...I dread the day someone buys it and I have to move everything out!!!  But that is what this is all about!

One of my FAVORITE trinket pieces is this blue and white hen. This is one of the pieces I really hate to sell!  It isn't "my style" but I just think she is precious

This is my "outdoor" space.  It is open on two sides and is next to the back door so I decorated it with a lot of "outdoor" pieces.  I have also used some 4th of July decorations throughout the spaces to give it a "patriotic flavor" in honor of our country's birthday next month!

IMG_9320.JPG

Somehow I did not get a picture of this cedar bench that is sitting on the left side of the booth.  I bought two at an auction and the wood was all rotted and broken.  So I replaced all the wood slats with new cedar...beautiful!

This is my overflow booth...Kaitlyn was sooo creative in setting it up!  We couldn't do a lot since I will have to move if the space is rented, but we wanted it to be appealing to buyers!  Great job, Kaitlyn!!!

This is a primitive mahogany chair I salvaged and rehabbed.  I haven't featured it yet, but it is an AWESOME piece!  The wood was literally bleached white and I sanded all the old finish off and then coated it with 3-4 coats of Danish oil...then reupholstered it!   It turned out so beautiful!  I debated what to do with it...paint it, funky upholstery...but in the end I just went natural and simple.  It spoke to me....

I'm pretty proud of the way it all turned out.  Unfortunately now I don't want anyone to touch anything...lol!  But I'm sure I will change my tune when (or if) things begin to sell!  After all, I do this so others can surround themselves with things they love!  And my hope is that there are others who will love ALL this as much as I do...because that is what I look for when I go to sales and auctions...things I love!!!

It's SUMMER TIME!!!

I planned on posting these projects earlier but have had so much going on I forgot about them...so they are already in the booths!  But here is a closer look at a few projects!

I picked up a simple little side table at an auction a few weeks ago (no I did NOT take "before" pictures!!! Dang it!)  I wasn't sure what to do with it until I found some precious watermelon platters at another auction!

Inspiration!  And the really great thing is I already had this green paint!

Too cute!!!

IMG_9273.JPG

And I put together several pieces that will make decorating for our country's birthday a snap!!!

Honestly, I didn't set out to do "patriotic" stuff...it just so happens I got in that "groove" and the next thing I know I have several pieces perfect for the 4th!

My intention on the little red table was to paint it with white chalk paint and sand it so the red would show through.  That worked great on the legs and bottom shelf but when I began to sand the top ALL of the paint began to peel off in sheets.  So I stripped the top, stained it, and put 4 coats of tung oil on it!  Beautiful!  Sometimes "oops" turns out for the best!

The little stool was blue and red with a Christmas angel on the top.  A little while chalk paint, sanding and a patriotic stool is born!  And the sign...honestly it was leftover cedar from a cast iron bench I am restoring....I glued the boards together, lightly spritzed it with blue paint, painted some white stars and sanded it!  I may leave it as is or I may string white and red burlap ribbon below it...kind of a "flag" thing!  Not sure...it will "speak" to me!

It seems like the projects are never ending when you bring home stuff every week from auctions...but I really am enjoying myself!

So glad I have somewhere to go with it...because as much as I really do LOVE all these pieces, I just have no room!!

All of these pieces are featured in my booths.....

Midtown Eclectic Mall...only FOUR DAYS UNTIL OPENING!

The last few days have been hectic....moving stuff in, setting up, organizing.  Craziness.  I have filled TWO booths and have a third "overflow."  Just too much "stuff."  As Brian has pointed out on more than one occasion, I seriously need to learn "moderation."

Today I have to get everything that is there organized and priced.  As much work as this is, I am excited about this new "venture."

Right now I have a lot of things just "crammed" into the space...so there is much work to be done!

I can't thank my family enough for all the help they have given.  Loading and unloading, organizing, advice!  Yesterday Katie spent the day hauling boxes and labeling a few things.  She even walked over and picked up a few tacos for lunch.  Only 20 more days and she can DRIVE over and get us lunch...scary thought!!!  But she is awesome and I was soooo grateful she spent the day with me!

I hope to get the majority of the displaying and pricing done today!  We open on Saturday and I do have a REAL job that requires my time and attention.  Yesterday I worked in the booth until 2ish and then I had to go empty out an apartment and mow and weed eat.  Needless to say I was EXHAUSTED when I got home last night...definitely a pizza night (thank you Matt and Kaitlyn!)

We watched the replay of my oldest son's football game.  Mitchell is a backup QB for the San Jose Saber Cats.  He played the entire second half Saturday night and since I slept through the game (dang time difference) I didn't get to see it.  So we watched it last night and even though they lost, it was great fun watching him play!   I miss him terribly, but I know he is doing something he loves!  What more can a mama ask for!

Also, my son Matt passed the written commercial flight test yesterday...scored a 95.  YEAH MATT!!!  So proud of him.  My only concern are the few he missed....I mean seriously, do you want to be on a plane and find out that the reason you are getting ready to crash is because the pilot didn't know THAT question on the test...lol!!!

Busy, busy week....isn't life wonderful!

BTW, speaking of life, I had an epiphany yesterday...LIFE should not be stressful.  MOMENTS are certainly stressful but if your entire life is stressful and you are always feeling overwhelmed, something is wrong...and I'm inclined to believe it is more of an "attitude" thing.  We only get one life...and it's way to short to walk around feeling completely overwhelmed!

Enjoy!

More wood window decor....

Recently I featured the old wood windows I have repurposed here.

They are a really neat design element if you can get your hands on a few.  Not terribly difficult to repurpose since there isn't much you could do to "enhance" them.  I just put a little paint on them, distressed a bit, reinstalled the glass and put on a chain to hang it!  The hardest part is getting the old glass out, but you really wouldn't even have to do that!

I bought a wreath to hang over the one on my porch.

IMG_8975.JPG

I wasn't sure I really "loved" the look of the original wreath...it's pretty, but seemed a bit "heavy" for the window.  So I went back and got the "lighter" wreath...

IMG_8996.JPG

Not a humungus difference but one I like a lot better.

This is a prime example of decorating with what you LOVE.  I didn't LOVE the first wreath, but I do this one.  And while most wouldn't even notice the difference, I did...every time I looked at my front porch!

So if you don't LOVE what you have done, change it!  Having something in your world that isn't what you really LOVE is like having a chipped nail...it will bug you until you do something about it! (My roots can be showing, my clothes are a mess...but I can get real bent about a fingernail...lol!)

Kaitlyn took one of the windows home and she is going to do some kind of paint technique on the glass.  I can't wait to see what she does...very crafty girl!  And my daughter Sarah has a window waiting for her that I painted black.  She is going to feature it in their remodeled game room!  And I just thought this stained one was kinda "interesting" behind my swing!

I've made a couple of cork boards out of a few of them.  They will be in my mall booth.  I'll make sure I post pictures when I get it all set up!

Hopefully THIS week.  Today is "organizing and pricing" day...I am exhausted from yesterday but there is much work to be done before the grand opening Saturday!

I am SOOOOOO excited!

So stay tuned...more inspiration to come!

What the heck...a table, a podium, a bird?

When I took the "before" picture I put it in a file titled "preacher's table." I honestly had no idea what you would use this table for...it has casters and a tilted top...but it is too short to be a "podium"......huh?

But then it dawned on me...THE KITCHEN!!! A cookbook table.  Awesomeness!!!!

You can put your cookbook (or Ipad) on the top, roll it next to your prep area and not take up valuable countertop space!  And it is a PERFECT place to store cookbooks and other baking and cooking knick-knacks! It's even a perfect height for a large mixer!

I considered doing a "plaster paint" treatment on it, but ended up going with a high gloss red...it just seemed "kitcheny"...and matches my Better Homes and Garden cookbooks!

Sand, Kilz, sand, tack, paint, sand, tack, more paint.  I know that seems like a labor intensive process, but for me, I like the results...so it is worth every minute! Provided someone is willing to pay ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS for this little table...lol!!!  JUST KIDDING!  But seriously, if you will pay that, give me a call!

I bought these little pineapple bookends at an auction...they were kind of a muckaly black (yeah, that is a color)...so I hit them with some Kilz and gloss white paint...PRETTY!!!

The jars...Oh My!  I have developed this "thing" for old jars.  I sat at an auction last Monday for FIVE HOURS just waiting on a few jars...seriously, they were like the second to the last thing to sell...grrr.  And then some lady bid some unreasonable amount for "choice."  I ended up with three decent ones and two chipped ones.  Dang it!

But trust me...I won't be lacking in jars when we set up the booth!

The opening of the new "mall" (Midtown Eclectic MALL) was pushed back to this Saturday.  I finished the pergola I built over our spaces...it is awesome.  And I found a gorgeous walnut board with a huge swirly knot right smack in the middle...it is seriously beautiful!  Since my neighbor and I are going in together, I can't have a sign that says "Beckwith's Treasures" so I painted "Timeless Treasures" on it....I sanded it, coated it with oil a few times and painted the wording with plaster paint.  Then I sanded it again so it would look "aged." It is really awesome

The bad news...I have too much stuff!!!  Yesterday we started loading stuff in and I honestly could use ANOTHER space...and I'm not doing that!  So this morning I have to go back and take a bunch of furniture home...to my garage...where my truck is SUPPOSE to be...but hasn't been for months!

The good news...IF something sells, I will have something else to put in its place immediately!  Hopefully I will get my garage back before the next snow.

I am thoroughly convinced I could NEVER be a hoarder...drives me crazy!
